The hushed whispers of the worried huddle crept down the hallway until they reached the room where Victoria was interned. There were no physical constraints on her – save for maybe the weighted blanket that she shared with Kate. Instead, it was an internal burden that kept her sandwiched between the covers above her and the mattress below. And though Courtney’s observation was crude, it was only an articulation of a concern that was surely looming over all of them.
Victoria was a Chase.
And Chases did not get sick.
Victoria is sick, but she gets taken care of.

But as the sunlight inched up on Kate’s face as the curtains rose, Victoria noticed how different she looked from the beginning of the year. The bags that Kate always carried beneath her eyes had all but disappeared. Her posture was different, straighter and more confident. Combine that with her attempt to pivot everyone’s attention to her after Victoria literally had a spotlight cast above her head, and anyone could see that there had been a marked change in the girl.
Victoria asks Kate for forgiveness, but that's not the person she should be asking.

Part of her still didn’t know why she had said yes to Kate’s request. Did she kind of feel bad after embarrassing her in front of the entire school? Maybe. Was it because she was getting more out of this deal than the other party? Of course, that was just good business sense. But as Victoria opened the door to Max’s room and saw the girl hunched over at her desk, panic shot through her. Was it because she enjoyed spending time with Max?
Max falls sick after spending the night out capturing the picture of a lifetime. Fortunately, she has a great friend like Kate to take care of her while she's unwell. Unfortunately, Kate is busy and somehow thinks that Victoria is an apt replacement.
