He's already starting to drift again, gasping as he jerks himself upright before the trigger can pull again, and Gil's terrified gasp lets him know just how close he came, even without realizing it.
'Gil's life depends on it, hmm?'
Another moment he nearly slips away, as hard as he's trying not to.
'Oh, but how unfortunate for him...you've always been so easy to put to sleep, Malcolm.'

But when Martin finally looks at Malcolm, it's the same way John had in that dark basement just before saying, no one ever will, and Malcolm suddenly isn't.

Malcolm wets his lips, swallows hard, exhales a breath that comes out as a soft sob of pain.
“They’ll find you,” he whispers. He means it as a threat, a last resort, something to scare John off, but he isn’t surprised when all John does is laugh.
"No, no, no. You see, that right there...that’s why we need to go somewhere private. Somewhere we'll have all the time in the world."
He grins, all teeth and malice, and leans to whisper in Malcolm's ear.
"Somewhere no one will ever find us.”

Summary
Malcolm's hand slides down to press flat against where Gil's is, and through just a few inches of thick glass Malcolm has never felt further away.
"I told you to wait!" Gil cries, pulling out his gun. “Why didn’t you wait?”
Weakly, Malcolm smiles. A hysterical giggle slips out as he spits more water. "Sorry," he whispers, with no chance of it being heard, but Gil must read his lips because he suddenly looks even more distressed than before.
He should have known, really. Malcolm’s never done anything more than disappoint him...it only fits that his death would be doing the same thing.

Gil had scoffed at the idea of a weekend getaway the first time Malcolm had suggested it, shortly after they’d started ‘seeing each other.’ But after that first trip—when Gil had seen how carefree and happy his boy had been once they’d gotten away from the city—he’s never hesitated to agree when Malcolm asks to go away with him.
Malcolm and Gil take a beach vacation, and are very soft, and very in love.

Summary
The case itself hadn't been too emotionally taxing, but Malcolm's personal life always was. Gil knows, from the bandage over the kid's hand to the faint bruise that shows up near his eye a day later, that something is going on. Finally, once the case is done, he gets a chance to ask about it.
