Summary
“And you’re sad?” Shane asks. Ilya sees the way Shane’s throat works before he asks, very carefully, “like she was?”
“No. She had reason to be sad.” Now that he’s started talking, the words tumble out of him. “I don’t know why she married my father, but it could not have been for happy reasons. She was desperate, or cornered. She was sad.”
Or, five times Ilya saw someone else in him and one time he saw himself in someone else

Summary
Ilya’s head snaps back, his back arching up and away from the ice. He’s convulsing, a choking sound escaping his throat. Strong arms pull Shane away as the medical team descends.
He fights the hands on him. “Stop it,” Shane demands. He identifies Bood as his captor. “Bood, let me go. I mean it, let me go. I’ll stay out of the way.”
“No, you won’t.” Bood tightens his grip. “Just give them a second to work. Roz needs them working on them more than he needs you blocking their way. You can see fine from here.”
But Bood doesn’t understand. If Ilya is aware, if he can hear and feel and see everything happening around him, there is nothing and no one truly familiar.
Or, Ilya gets his bell rung

Summary
Ilya’s career did not end in a blaze of glory, Stanley Cup above his head, kissing Shane Scott-Hunter-style on international television. They did not retire their jerseys together in the Centaur’s rink, waving at fans hand in hand after their final game.
Ilya’s career did not end with a single terrible injury, the kind that would make its way into YouTube compilations for years to come.
Ilya’s career ended quietly, in Terry’s office, sitting next to Shane, after he spent most of the season in the training room rather than on the ice. Ilya knew it was coming. Shane knew it was coming. Hell, any sports commentator worth their salt knew it was coming.Or, Ilya retires. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

Summary
Shane rolls his eyes internally at how willing Ilya is to shoulder the blame. “No, I’m sorry,” Shane says, “I forget, sometimes. It’s not fair that we fight in my first language all the time. I wouldn’t want to go at it in French. Or Russian.”
Ilya scoffs. “You do not even have enough Russian to get in a fight. What do we fight about, the way you said hello? Shane, that hello was too formal. Sorry but we must argue about this.”
“You know what I mean,” Shane says, then realizes the irony of this while trying to be sensitive about the hurdles of language acquisition. “I just mean, it’s not fair that we’re in my native language, always. Your English is great, obviously, so I forget. But I shouldn’t. Forget.”
Or, the unyielding struggles of life in your second language, as told by Shane

Summary
If Ilya had known that Shane was gone forever, known the irrelevance of worrying about his spine in those final precious moments before he was yanked away from his body, he would have gathered Shane into his arms on the ice. He would have taken his last opportunity to hold the love of his life while he was still warm, rock him and tell him it’s okay, kiss his hair, and pretend Shane could still hear him.
Or, Shane and Ilya are married and so close to getting their happily ever after. They don't.

Summary
The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.
The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.
“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”
Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.
“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"
Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.- Language:

Summary
Galina stopped writing to look at Ilya. "Do you think he'd be willing to talk to you next time it happens, even if it's late?"
Ilya's stomach turned over. He didn't even want to consider it, but he knew the answer. "Yes. But he silences his phone at night."
"Most phones these days have an option to let certain numbers ring through, even on Do Not Disturb. Do you think he'd be open to setting that up for you?"
Imagining that conversation made Ilya nauseous. Yes, no fucking doubt, Shane would be open to it if Ilya explained the reason. "I'm not going to ask him to do that."
Set during The Long Game, an alternate version where the plane scene doesn't happen. Instead, there's this: a car crash, a therapist's duty to report, and an urgent reckoning with priorities.

Summary
Hayden could not imagine someone losing that and their mother in the same day. It would age you. It would change you. Perhaps by the time Ilya had been thirteen, and fourteen, perhaps he had already been grown.
Hayden Pike grit his teeth because he knew he had been wrong. Ilya Rozanov had never just been an obnoxious hockey player with a colossal ego and nice smile - nice enough to entrap Shane Hollander, anyway - and now his hatred was mostly unfounded. He hated it when people were more complex than they seemed. It meant he had to change his mind.

Five times people see the impact of Ilya growing up too fast, and one time a tiger becomes a boy again.

Summary
Shane’s heart skipped as he watched Ilya’s eyes squeeze shut, a groan leaving his mouth. Not the deep breathy groan Shane was used to hearing; the one that sent a familiar heat curling low in his gut, that made him absurdly proud of how easily he could undo Ilya Rozanov.
No, it was a bit higher, more strained.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” He quickly pushed himself more upright, hands hovering but hesitating to touch Ilya’s still frozen form.
