“Lovebell is a child,” Olivier spat. Ice cracked in her voice.
“Twenty-seven.” Miles didn’t flinch. “You commanded battalions at twenty.”
“And look what it forged.” She shoved back from the scarred desk. Wood shrieked. Prowled to the thick-paned window. Outside, the aurora bled across the black sky – wounded serpents thrashing in celestial agony. Her reflection glared back: pale, sharp, a weapon honed too fine. “A butcher. Polished with a title. She deserves…” Sunlight. Softness. Air not thick with blood and frostbite.
Miles sighed. “You think she craves a saint? The girl reassembles landmines for recreation.”
“She deserves better.” The words. Raw. Unwanted. Like a bullet tearing through muscle. “Decades… carving myself into this.” She gestured sharply at her uniform, at the sword hilt gleaming coldly. “Scars. Midnight patrols. What’s that to offer?”
“Loyalty.” Miles’s voice was low, bedrock steady. He paused, letting the weight settle. “A partner who’d scorch the earth itself to ash before harm touched her.”
Olivier’s knuckles whitened on the window frame. “It’s forbidden.”
“Since when,” Miles countered, his gaze unflinching, “did Olivier Mira Armstrong bow to rules?”
