Summary
Riku’s able to get the words out. Lips numb, mind blank, rote and automaton in the way he delivers the story. Like it had happened to someone else, and not to him. Disarming Sora, triumphant, only for Sora to impale himself on his own keyblade as Riku held it firm and true.
The fact that Kairi had returned is obvious. The fact that Sora is no more is implied.
The room is quiet for a moment as everyone digests that information.
Leon, thankfully, ignores the more painful details, instead launching into theories about the nature of that too-sharp keyblade and the keyhole. The princesses’ hearts are back where they ought to be and we need to seal that keyhole. Plans are made. For the first time since he’d picked up the Keyblade, Riku feels the weight of his destiny like a burden.

Riku leaves Hollow Bastion with more friends than he'd had when he'd entered it. It is, somehow, infinitely worse.

Perhaps if they had awakened before the end of the world, they would have known this; perhaps they would have struggled with it, or coped with it, or had some sort of opinion on the matter. But they sleep through the end of the world, and through a thousand years after; and time, as it is wont to do, steals away their memories, their powers, their dreams. Everything that makes them them is burned away as they fall through the eons like a star—and the boy who wakes in the middle of a desolate graveyard has no idea who he is or who he’s been.

The awkward kid standing in front of him has to be, what, twenty five? Twenty six, tops. Hardly a kid at all, really, but Jeez, does Bdubs ever feel like an old geezer looking at him.
“Etho?” he says experimentally.
The kid blinks over at him owlishly. “Bdubs?” he says and, yeah, that’s Etho’s voice alright. Quiet and unsure, and softer than it’s been in years, but definitely, definitely Etho.
