A lump forms in Helaena’s throat. “I already told you, I could not sleep. I wished to see y…I wanted to make sure you were all right.”
Aegon laughs, the sound as brittle as browning leaves. Her brother is cruel. He has not always been this way, she knows, but she struggles to remember a time before it.
Helaena purses her lips. She focuses on a spot on the ceiling and the scratching of tiny claws somewhere deep down below them. “And I thought — I hoped maybe you might hold me down.”
