Sam tells his mom about vampires even though Michael asked him not to. She decides to skip dinner with Max and prove to herself that everyone is just dealing with a lot of stress right now. Everything will be fine. It's just been a lot lately. Except it's not fine. And Sam wasn't making anything up. Michael really is turning into a vampire. She can fix this. She knows she can. Between her and Sam, they are convinced they can make Michael human again. She just hopes he can forgive her when it's all over.
*Told from various POVs - Some Lucy, some Sam, a lot of Michael's POV, but that gets really murky because he's going through it*

Michael doesn't actually want to kill David. He's fighting because he feels like he has to, but even that resolve is quickly waning.
How prepared could a couple of Rambo wannabes be anyway? They'd never actually fought vampires before, and everything they knew about how-to came from a measly couple of comic books. It doesn't take long for them to realize they're more in over their heads than they realize.
Or: The night of the confrontation goes down a little (lot) differently.

Michael anxiously moves closer to David's body, staring at him for a long, intense moment. He slowly reaches out a hand with the intention of resting it against David's cheek. He's not sure why he wants to. Maybe to make sure this wasn't some trick, and David wouldn't spring up, face twisted into those nightmarish, ghoulish features, ready to rip his throat out.

“What the hell did you do, Michael?”
Michael blinked at him, startled.
“Cuz I was dead.” David’s voice sharpened. “We were dead. Burned, staked, drowned. And now…” He gestured around them — the neon, the crowd, the same night replaying itself. “We’re standing here like none of it ever happened. So, tell me, what the hell did you do?”
Michael’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His heartbeat thundered in his ears.
“I—I don’t…” he stammered, backing up a half-step. “I don’t know, David, I just.......I rode out to the hotel....I screamed until my throat bled. I told you I was sorry. I begged you to forgive me.” His fingers shook as he spoke, his eyes glassy. “And then…Everything went dark, and when I woke up.....I was in the car again. Back at the start. Like none of it happened.”
The silence that followed was heavy, drawn tight.
Paul exhaled slowly. “So… you wished us back?”
“I didn’t mean to!” Michael said quickly. “I didn’t even know I could!"
