“Let me get the door,” he said softly, finally regaining his momentum and coming up onto the landing next to her.
“I’m perfectly capable of opening our front door,” she huffed, sidestepping to allow him more room around her skirts.
“You’re perfectly capable of plenty, of that I have no doubt,” John replied, sliding the key into the lock. “But the first-footing won’t bode well if I let you go in before me.”
Margaret blinked, not fully understanding her husband’s meaning.
“The first-footing?”
“Aye,” John said, turning the knob and swinging the large, heavy door inwards. “It’s bad luck to let a woman into your home on the new year before anyone else. Didn’t you know that?”

Summary
Thorin, try as he might, cannot come up with an excuse. He stands, without shirt, in the forge, carefully crafting a blue bead. Durin blue, to be exact.
And Dwalin stares, unimpressed, as Thorin clenches his jaw, and struggles to come up with a reason as to why he’s crafting a courting bead.
“For the Hobbit?”
Thorin sighs through his nose.
“Indeed.”
“When will you give it to him?”
“I… do not know if he will return my affections.”
Dwalin serves him another deeply unimpressed look.
“Soon. You should give it to him soon, my King.” The last bit is said with a sternness that only Dwalin would ever speak to him with. Thorin watches as he leaves, and then glances back down at the bead.
Soon. Definitely.

Summary
When Thorin encounters Bilbo at Bag End, he recognizes the young hobbit immediately the same hobbit he'd slept with years ago in Hobbiton, a violation of everything dwarf culture holds sacred. Thorin's guilt consumes him.
As he showers Bilbo with gifts and formal attention in an attempt to honor him, Bilbo interprets each gesture as an insult. Neither understands the other's customs.

Summary
Post BOFA - Bilbo stays in Erebor for a full year, hopeful that he can carve out a place amongst the dwarves. Unfortunately his relationship with the king is still tense, and the two have not regained their easy comradery from the quest. The hobbit announces he plans to depart for the Shire, garnering a poor joke from Bofur about having “his pick of the hobbit lasses!” Bilbo however disabuses them of this notion quickly, assuring them all it is just his home he misses - besides, he would be considered virtually ineligible due to his going on the quest. The dwarves won’t take this lying down and make sure to introduce him to a host of strapping dwarves who would properly appreciate their burglar. Thorin meanwhile, is turning into a green eyed monster, but it isn’t the gold he is craving.
