This is set before they have actually filmed the first video, when Thomas was debating if he should use this style of 'personalities' to talk to his viewers.

It was the thing human parents fear the most.
“Daddy, where do babies come from?”
“Well honey, when a grown-up boy and a grown-up girl decide that they want to have a baby, they wish really hard for a baby to bless their lives. Then one of them will carry the child until it’s ready to be hatched.”
While humans might say that what Peppy told Poppy was a metaphor for a young child to understand… For trolls, this wasn’t an exaggeration so much as the literal truth.
There are two things needed to make a new troll: the will and intercourse. And the intercourse can sometimes be fairly optional.

“I remember this invite, too.” She looked up at him with a huge grin on her face. “I can’t believe you kept this.”
“I kept everything you gave me,” Branch admitted rather sheepishly.
Poppy frowned slightly, and looked down at the tiny figures meant to represent Poppy and Branch. It was crude, even by her own artistic standards; one of the first invites that she made.
“But you never went to this party. Or any of these parties.”
