    At sixteen Wei Wuxian is—through some strange twist of fate, or a nick in the layer between parallel universes, who knows—out of the blue confronted with that one incense burner dream one night.

    While his curious mind is left unable to stop poking at this new perspective on Lan Wangji, circumstances in the Cloud Recesses begin to change and Wei Wuxian is suddenly presented with life-altering opportunities.

    Maybe Gusu isn’t so bad after all?

    (Or alternatively: The fic where I get to give Wei Wuxian the academic scholarship he deserves while simultaneously getting him hitched early on.)

    "A-Xian!" he heard a voice call from a distance. It sounded very familiar and triggered a feeling of security in him. The sun tickled his nose and he screwed up his face. He opened his eyes and was still in Lotus Pier, where he had fallen asleep. He was still a child. A young Yanli and a young Jiang Cheng were with him, laughing and chatting. It was now the third day that he experienced like this and everything was continuously taking its course. Slowly it became clear to him... this could not be a memory or a dream. Either he was dead and his life just passed his eyes in real time or he had been transferred back to his child self!
    For the second time in his existence, something had happened to him that he had never expected. Amused, he wondered if he could now call this his second reincarnation.
    He stared at the cloudless sky and suddenly realized the magnitude of this event. He felt his heartbeat quicken and his breathing become heavy. His throat tightened and his eyes began to burn. He had been given a chance. A chance to change everything. And he would take it or die trying!
    ... And he would snatch Lan Zhan much sooner!

Zhuliu was more inclined to consider the event a nuisance, weighed down by the grim possibility that something would go wrong and the exhausting certainty that Wei Wuxian was incapable of staying out of trouble.

    Wei Wuxian cradles his husband in his arms and feels himself start to drift off, nestling his cheek against Lan Wangji's hair. Even if this is a dream, it's a good dream to let Wei Wuxian hold his husband like this, offer the comfort he was too afraid of rejection to give the first time they were in this cave together. A good dream.

    (Well, first he has to remove his husband's very spiky hairpiece because it's stabbing him in the neck, clearly having been designed to be uncomfortable for the person wearing it, and also everyone else in the immediate vicinity, but after that it's all good.)
