“I couldn’t forget you,” Noctis says. Prompto’s cheeks burn at his earnest insistence, at the idea he is worth remembering at all and cannot find it in himself to tell Noctis the sum-total of their interactions twelve years ago were shoulders brushing in a hallway and Prompto tripping so dramatically over his own shoelace that he took out three of their classmates with him.

Noctis is difficult to work with.
It’s not the first time Prompto has heard this, though he’s never experienced it himself. The problem, Prompto thinks, is that Noctis is actually a little shy and would not have chosen this career if it were not handed to him.

    Summary

Ignis hates idle chatter, closes his door at the Citadel to avoid small talk and grinds his teeth through making coffee in the staffroom. Watching these streams is a little like that, he thinks, only listening to Quicksilver prattle about his day doesn’t annoy him in the slightest.
It just makes him want to hear more.
    “What…is this?” Ignis asks awkwardly.
“A stream,” Noctis says slowly, sounding a little confused—rightly so, to him they had this conversation just two days ago. “It’s a game—”
“That part I understand,” Ignis says quickly. “But this game in particular. It’s about cleaning?”
Noctis snorts. “Kind of, I guess. It’s cool.”
“So, you’re saying if I bought one of those—”
“Can I power wash the Regalia?” Noctis asks excitedly. “Can I bring Prompto?”
The answer is no, but Ignis wonders if that's the only way he'll get to meet Prompto.

Alternatively: When Noctis starts watching a new streamer, Ignis thinks nothing of it. Until he starts watching Quicksilver too.

But all of that is nothing, absolutely nothing compared to the sound of Prompto’s laugh, unfiltered through a microphone, already stamped onto Ignis’ heart—fundamental to his very existence.

[Prompto 17:15] you’re making me blush
[Ignis 17:16] That’s no real challenge. But it looks good on you, so you shouldn’t fret.

“You have to stop subscribing to my PomPom channel,” Prompto demands.
    “Why?”
“It’s a—um, conflict of interests,” Prompto says.

    Summary

For as long as he can remember, Prompto has dreamed about the same boy. He brings him to life in ways he never knew he needed anyone to. He makes him feel things he's never felt for another person before. And every morning when he wakes up, alone in his empty house, he aches for someone that doesn't even exist.

He's falling in love with someone who doesn't even exist.

And halfway across the world, Noctis is haunted every night by a boy in his dreams. He has a smile that breaks apart the storm clouds hanging over his head on a gloomy day. A voice that makes him feel warm in the winter, and he's slowly falling in love with someone who doesn't even exist.

“Believe it or not,” Ignis says slowly. “You’re not the first heir of Lucis to find their mate through dream walking."

    Summary

Prompto straightens, still smiling, still holding onto her. Noctis watches and stays exactly where he is. Even as the music carries on. Even as the lanterns flicker overhead. Even as something unsettled lingers, quiet and persistent, just under the surface, where he refuses to look at it too closely.

He’s not sure what he’s supposed to be feeling.

    And that terrifies him.

Prompto deserves someone who looks at him like that—like he’s the only thing in the room worth paying attention to, like he’s easy to choose.
Noctis knows that. He knows that.
So why does it feel like something’s being taken from him? Like something’s slipping through his fingers before he’s even had the chance to understand what it was? Why does the idea of Prompto laughing like that—just like that—but not because of him make his chest feel tight enough to hurt?

With one look towards the darkness of the water, Noctis sighs and lets his feet take him right back to that square, where music is loud, but his heartbeat is louder, as his eyes look for that one person who holds his heart in the palm of his hand.

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

Heat crawls violently up Noctis’ neck, his words less and less convinced of their truth with every passing second. “I was subtle.”
“You wanted to deck a girl,” Gladio says, crossing his arms over his chest like a disappointed older brother who just saw his younger sibling doing something he wasn’t supposed to. “Over a dance.”

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

“Okay, look, just let this go, alright. Forget I said anything.”
“You didn’t say anything,” Prompto deadpans, “I had to figure it out myself.”
Noctis throws his hands up in the air, “And you figured it out wrong!”
    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

“Oh, for the love of Astrals, Prompto! I wasn’t jealous of you, I was jealous of her!

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

Prompto shifts slightly closer again, enough for his shoulder to brush Noctis’ arm. “C’mon,” he says more quietly this time. “Dance with me.”

“He’s in much higher spirits today than he usually is at these types of events,” Regis said, watching his son intently. “I can’t help but wonder,” he continued, glancing sideways at Prompto, “if your presence may have something to do with that.”

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

“Yeah,” Noct insisted, trying to recover his dignity. “All I meant was that you’re basically my emotional support idiot.”
Prompto couldn’t help it. This time he burst out laughing.

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

His smile faded into something smaller and quieter, warmth stirring behind his chest. He hoped more than ever that Noct would keep his word; that he wouldn’t forget about Prompto.
But even if that day came eventually, Prompto would stay until it did. He’d stay for every laugh he could get out of him; every late-night hangout; every moment where Noct needed an emotional support idiot to talk to to clear his mind. He’d stay as long as Noct would have him.

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

Somehow, it didn’t just feel like he was being escorted out of the palace.
With every step that took him closer to the exit, it felt more like being escorted out of Noct’s life entirely.

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

“I must say, Noct,” Ignis began lightly, his tone edged with something that made Noct immediately look at him. “I’m still rather surprised that you aren’t attending Prompto’s exhibit today.”
Everything in the limo seemed to stop at once.
Regis turned sharply toward Noct. Gladio’s head snapped up. Clarus lifted a single, judgemental eyebrow - what Noct had to assume was the Clarus version of a gasp.
But Noct was still looking at Ignis - the other man’s words not making any sense to him. He frowned, confusion knitting in, as if he’d misheard a detail in a language he should have known.
    “...What?”

    ○○○○○○○○○○○○

He couldn’t picture a future where Prompto wasn’t at his side - brightening the dark days, steadying the heavy ones, and making everything easier just by being there.
