Summary
An older man, Gino, aged 55, befriends a family when he is on vacation in San Diego. He learns the couple, Steve and Julia, serve as foster parents for children who have been put into the system from abusive homes or parents who have gone to jail. The couple invites him to their home, where he meets one of their foster children, a waifish girl named Samantha, who goes by the nickname Sammy, age 11, who has been there for six months after being removed from a home after her father was arrested for sexually abusing one of her friends and a mother who often left her alone at home for days at a time. Samantha is very shy and has trouble meeting his eyes, but Gino is immediately smitten and decides he wants to try to adopt her and take him back to his twenty-acre homestead in the Smokey Mountains. This is a very-slow-burn tale of their relationship.
