Summary
This is a continuation of Alluvium - a retelling of Naomi Novik's Uprooted from the Dragon's perspective. The first nine chapters were completed by AWizardWithoutHerStaff, who has graciously allowed me to carry on the story with her premise.
So: you will first need to have read Uprooted. Then you will need to have read Alluvium for chapters 1-9, because we're picking things up right off the bat with Chapter 10

The shadow snorts and shifts, like it is moving weight from foot to foot, and Spain stares resolutely forward, watching desperately from the very corners of his periphery. “I’m talking to you, aren’t I?” it asks, as if that means it’s real, as if that must mean Spain hasn’t lost himself completely to grief and anger and something irreparably, irrevocably broken within him.
In the aftermath of the unification of Italy, Spain finds himself being haunted. He also finds that he doesn’t mind.
