With Cerritos in drydock for repairs, the Warp Drive Five (plus Olly) get a few days of shore leave on Earth. Time to relax, renew contacts, and maybe bring new love interests home to meet family. That might not be a smooth or happy process for everyone, though. For some, Starfleet was a fact of life from birth. For others, it was a way to escape from a home that felt too confining. For still others, there might have been even darker reasons.

D'Vana Tendi is fifteen years old. She has already, secretly, decided to enroll in Starfleet in three years. In the meantime, she is reading the manuals.
There are a lot of manuals.
They are very, very strange.
A character study spanning fifteen years, from an Orion teenager reading Navigating Multispecies Social Norms with increasing bewilderment, to a Starfleet officer on the USS Cerritos who has spent a decade learning to live in a one-tenth-bandwidth world — and who is beginning to understand, finally, why the bandwidth was ever restricted in the first place.
Tendi can smell everything. This is not a superpower. It is not a disability. It is the condition of being Orion in a room full of people who can't, and who mostly don't know she can, and who built their entire social architecture to compensate for a sense they don't consciously possess.
She loves them anyway. Possibly because of it.

Summary
Later in the evening following Shroud’s defeat, Robert and Courtney grab tacos for dinner. Then get up to a bunch of other wholesome activities like meeting the Z team for celebratory drinks and fucking. Things get a little domestic. Mecha Man takes his place at the head of the Z team while the last vestiges of the Red Ring accept a dangerous offer for a chance at revenge. Malevola confronts her past. Visi pushes herself to be more. Robert tries to solve a mystery. Golem learns painful truths.
Post-Canon Epilogue to help cope until s2 formerly titled “embarassing” because it started as a 1shot fluff scene of the same name and morphed into more of my interpretation of the post-canon story.
It’s gotten a bit out of hand with the world building but it’s a lot of fun to write.

Summary
In the aftermath of an awkward situation Mariner put both herself and Boimler into for a dare while on shore leave, the two are paired together on a supply run to a new Starfleet science outpost. Things soon turn sideways on the return trip, and the junior lieutenants subsequently find themselves caught between battle lines in a conflict on an unfamiliar world that most definitely wasn’t in the mission briefing.
The conflict has its roots in another that Mariner remembers all too well, and consequently she is forced to confront her demons with Boimler at her side. In so doing her closest companion will come to understand a great deal more about the dynamics of their relationship and her as well.
The past has a way of catching up with the present.
