gerard didn’t let go. he rolled them, pinning frank beneath him just long enough to keep him from bolting or trying again. “stop–stop moving, you’re safe, you’re–”
frank thrashed. his head cracked against the bottom rung of the fire escape ladder. gerard lunged to cushion it, twisting his own body between frank and the metal.
too late.
his temple slammed into the sharp edge of the railing with a wet crack.
white-hot pain exploded behind his eyes. the world strobed. rain-slick alley, frank’s horrified face, the distant glow of the streetlight, all of it fracturing into black shards.

he smoothed down the front of his uniform, the crisp white nurse’s dress brushing against his knees. it was an old-style one, the kind they’d dug out of storage because he’d specifically requested it.
gerard had just finished charting when the double doors at the end of the corridor slammed open.
“fucking let go–” he snarled, voice raw and edged with a cocky, dangerous lilt that promised more trouble.

gerard had heard the name already, whispered like a warning during orientation. ward’s most beautiful disaster. short-tempered. violent. impossible to ignore.
blood trickled from a fresh split in his lower lip, one eye was already swelling, blooming into a vicious purple-black. his dark hair was a mess, tattooed fingers flexing against the orderlies’ grips as they hauled him toward the exam room.
“fight in the common area,” an orderly grunted, shoving frank onto the table.
frank laughed, low and rough, spitting a little blood onto the floor. “he looked at me funny. what was i supposed to do?”
the orderlies left, locking the door behind them with a heavy click. gerard was alone with him.

Summary
Gerard didn’t think he would make it past the age of 25. It just never seemed to be in the cards for him. The world he lived in was not meant for people like him. That’s why at the age of 26, somehow still kicking, he found himself adrift, attending weekly group therapy sessions for suicide survivors and scrambling to make a list of all the reasons he shouldn’t try again.
He certainly never expected the newest, aggressively hostile member of the therapy group - Frank, who seems to hate everyone and everything on principle - to become the next bullet point on that list.
