“Where are we going?” Fives asked her as they stepped out onto the street. He held his breath, dearly hoping that she’d request they go back to the barracks, back to the 501st - back where she belonged. However much he wanted it, he knew from all his experiences with Ahsoka over the years that he absolutely should not make that suggestion himself. Brilliant, brave and beautiful Ahsoka may be, she was also stubborn, especially around him. If he made the suggestion that she reverse her life-altering decision, she was more likely to dig her heels in and refuse - even if it went against what she really wanted. It was a delicate situation. Fives couldn’t afford to make the wrong move because the stakes were impossibly high: he couldn’t lose her. He refused to contemplate his life without Ahsoka in it.

It is strange for his heart to ache for her, all the worse because she is almost impossible to mourn. There is nothing to mourn, when he never learned the shape of her face or the cadence of her voice. But still, he would have known her if he’d met her then, he thinks. He would have known her blind and deaf, because she was Anakin’s and Obi-Wan's and his in all of the ways that mattered.
