“What is it?” Caitlyn clarifies without actually clarifying anything.
Vi blinks back at her and finally takes a moment to swallow. “What’s what?”

Summary
From the start, Caitlyn’s relationship with Vi was three things: unexpected, unlikely, and, more than anything else, absolutely irreplaceable. She’d never imagined that the hot-headed, irreverent woman she’d met by chance would become her closest friend, the person she trusts above anyone else. Caitlyn would do anything to protect what they have, including fighting against the voice in her head wondering what would happen if they became more.
Then–a kiss, and a miscalculation. Caitlyn knows she has only one chance to make things right, one chance to prove to Vi that she is worth the risk.

Summary
When a car accident takes away not only her wife, but her hopes of building a family, Caitlyn decides to leave behind her hometown to move back in with her college roommate Powder Lanes. The friendship the two have quickly becomes the only thing keeping Caitlyn from giving up on life completely.
After nearly dying while deployed, Vi returns home to South Carolina after finding out the love of her life was seeing someone else. Though her mother is thrilled, her sister is less than pleased to see the return of the sister she believes abandoned her.
Eventually Caitlyn and Vi end up meeting at Powder's engagement party and form a trauma bond which they believe is meant to be nothing more than a friendship of understanding. Yet as they begin to spend more and more time together, something deeper beneath the surface begins to form. Will they allow their relationship to develop into something more or will they both hold on to their fear of life taking away the things and people that matter most to them?

She keeps her eyes on Vi the whole time, from when she’s peeled from Loris’s arms, her skin so, so pale. Soot and ash painting her, oil staining her. A humorless laugh bubbles out of her and her legs shake under her.
Oak doors close and the ringing in her ears recedes, only to be filled with what can only be a sort of disciplined panic. One that comes with toying with death. The halls reek of it now.“Commander, you should rest.”
She almost doesn’t recognize Loris’s voice, the deep rumble of it. Far kinder than she deserves to be spoken to. She leans against the wall, sinking to the floor that holds speckles of blood. Her hands tremble against her knees, her eyes stay trained on the door. Hoping to hear anything. Because if they’re still shouting and talking, it means she’s not lost– that she won’t lose Vi for a second time.
She isn’t yours to lose, a cruel part of her brain seeks to remind her.OR: After the explosion in Viktor's commune, Caitlyn can do nothing but wait.

“Hey, you.” Talanah’s smiling voice filters through, feathery at the edges and rasped in the vowels. Stutter-pulsed, all reflex, Aloy turns toward the sound and feels silly for it when she finds only shadows. “Glad you made it back.”
“Uh—hey. Yeah. Hi,” Aloy stumbles in response, flustered. Suddenly everything she planned to say slips from her grasp and scatters before she can chase it. Slinging her forearm across her eyes like bracing against a gale of wind, she gathers a breath and tries to pull it together. “Sorry. Did I, ah, wake you?”
When preparations for Nemesis have Aloy frustrated, Talanah is there (in a sense) to help her blow off steam.

Summary
“Say it again,” Vi all but begs. Her fingers dig into Caitlyn’s wrist and hip where she holds her close like she’ll float away in the ripples the wind makes in the grass, like the tide, like she isn’t Caitlyn’s anchor. Like she isn’t the only thing keeping Caitlyn afloat.
“Qīn’ài de. Oh, qīn’ài de. My dearest.”
Vi kisses her under the sunshine, the first time she’s felt it in years, and Caitlyn kisses back. Wind rustles through the trees, birds are singing, Caitlyn’s mom is dead, and she kisses Vi in the backyard she grew up in like she’s wanted to from the moment those bars between them slid open and Inmate 516 had a name again, a future again.
“Again,” Vi breathes. Their noses brush.
Caitlyn says it into her mouth as if Vi swallowing will keep it in her forever. “Qīn’ài de.”
(Or, it’s not just language. There's knowing and then there's understanding.)

Summary
“The views from the mountain are spectacular this time of year.” Her father had set the album in her lap with it opened to a photo of Caitlyn and her mother tossing handfuls of seed into the grass and laughing as a flock of hungry birds descended on them from above. “I’m certain Vi would love the villa just as much as you always have.” With a hand on her shoulder and a kiss on the top of her head, he’d smiled and added, “I think the two of you have more than earned a bit of rest. Even a brief one. Wouldn’t you agree?”
So, that’s how Caitlyn found herself elbow deep in neatly folded clothing the day after her wedding, with Vi humming quietly as she packed her own bag beside her.

Caitlyn and Vi spend a few weeks alone at the family villa in the mountains for their honeymoon. And after all the chaos that has followed them throughout their lives so far, such a soft and sweet interlude is welcome for the both of them.
This is a continuation of my previous fics Something to Get Used To and To Be Known as Yours, but can be read as a standalone story as well.

Whether it’s out of frustration or just an excuse to avert her eyes from the sudden bright sight, Powder drops her head down onto the bar with an audible conk .
“Do you think she might —” The blonde clasps her hands together in a childish kind of glee, leaning in close to Ekko and Powder. “like her? ”

As Vi rubs a dry towel too harshly over her face, she mumbles into it the same thing she said before. “I didn’t know I could do that.”
Cait’s chest is warm again for a new reason, and then all of her is warm. Vi is still gripping the towel, so Cait tries to counteract her tension with a soft kiss to her forehead. “You can do it again,” she whispers against Vi’s skin. “If you’d like to.” Vi’s breathing catches, and Cait thinks she feels a slight nod. Maybe.

Caitlyn is struggling with her grief and her guilt, Vi has to learn how to live. The road will either save them, or swallow them whole.

As a result, golden beams of sunlight dance through the room, illuminating both the bed and the person laying beside her in it.

Slender fingers find her own in her mindless grazing over Caitlyn’s skin. They trail over the top of Vi’s hand, her touch pointed and gentle where Vi’s skin is split open.
“We should–” Caitlyn clears her throat, the sound almost shy. She’s holding Vi’s hand now, thumb taking inventory of Vi’s self-inflicted wounds. “We should take a look at your hands.”
The suggestion is so soft. So tentative. And in some less hazy part of Vi’s brain, she knows Cait’s right.
It isn’t even a thought when her arms wrap around Caitlyn’s waist, pulling them even more flush together. She buries her face in the crook of Caitlyn’s neck, shamelessly breathing her in before murmuring, her voice a cracked and low hum, “Later, Cupcake. Let me have this first.”
Because there was a moment– several moments, all of them scattered in broken glass bottles on an apartment floor she never wants to see again– where she never thought she’d get to have this.
