“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Shane knew he was a parallax error in human form, his position shifting depending on where you stood to look at him, never resolving into a fixed point, because the observers couldn’t agree on the angle and he had long since stopped correcting them: not quite Asian, not quite white, a Rorschach test in a flight suit. Canada’s blankest canvas. The face they could project onto without having to see, the way you could stare at the night sky and find whatever constellation you’d already decided to look for.
JUST THE FIC I NEEDED. AUSTRONAUT AU!!! In the top three of the fics I read in 2026.
The stars did not applaud. The stars did not notice. But they were there, all of them, the full obscene catalog, and Shane looked at them and for the first time in his life did not feel small. Instead, Shane uses the leftover money to buy a Hello Kitty watch, pastel pink, childish, utterly incongruous with the danger circling him. He wears it to his next night shift without irony or apology.
Ilya notices immediately. He is fascinated.

Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

Part II to Vestigial Instincts
Very very good writing, but hard/uncomfortable read in places when Ilya is in the throes of his depression/feelings (but too good to actually click away from). They have very real/mean fights that feel human.maybe it's the way the landscape seems to draw them into a protective embrace, as if holding only Shane, Ilya, and their car in its palms, offering them sight of the sun, dancing playfully with the waves, rolling leisurely along the sea's crystalline surface.
It's a part of Shane Ilya never got to see when their relationship was kept to just hotel rooms. Shane has so much love in his heart for the natural world. Even though he's driving, Shane's face lights up with total awe when he sees the view of water. The joy completely transforms him.
When Shane glances back on the road, he shoots Ilya another smile, like he can't believe they are here together. He repeats the phrase he was trying to teach Ilya one last time. "It was one of the first sentences I learned how to say in French," Shane says. He rolls down his window, and the sound of waves, the howl of humid wind, and the distant chirps of cicadas pour in. He repeats himself one last time, and translates the phrase for Ilya. After rain comes fair weather.
