The woman with the sharp nose laughs, the sound grating in the air between them. She moves her lips closer to Mar's ear, whispering, “People get ‘only alive’ bounties for one of two reasons.” The hand holding Mar's chin loosens and one of the fingers gently follows the curve of her jawline.
“They either have connections to people in higher positions in the world that allow for leniency in their bounty or…” the woman narrows her eyes even further, turning her gaze as serrated as a knife. “The person happens to know or have something that the world government desperately wants that cannot be obtained with their death." Althea doesn’t care if she is seen as weak or pathetic. Let them think what they want. In fact, she welcomes the pity in their eyes as long as it gets her what she wants. She knows her worth, what she is capable of. In the end, Althea will be the one in control.
Yet, Mikan’s outstretched hand keeps her paralyzed. The wind whispers in her ears and laughs as she continues staring at the tremor going through that hand, trying to remind her of a different world. Althea can only wonder why she is affected by someone as vulnerable and starved for love as Mikan.
