To let it whatever it was go and give their boss space. At the time, it had seemed best. Every time Jesper thought he had seen a bit of something more from Kaz, a genuine smile that lit up his eyes and made him look real, those jaws would snap shut and Kaz would be unreachable again. It was like Brekker was one of those damned hermit crabs that wandered up and down the docks, determined to tuck themselves in their hard shells at the first sign of someone getting close. Jesper didn’t want to lose the bit of Kaz they had coaxed out so far, not when it felt like such a gift to have it. He had wanted to stop pestering and let Kaz come to them instead, and because of that he may have signed the poor guy’s death warrant."

"He stumbled down the familiar streets of Ketterdam, making his way towards the Silver Six with the sharp tang of blood on his tongue. Though the streetlights were flickering to life one after another as the sun sat low on the horizon, Kaz was only now feeling like his day had truly started. Like clockwork, he fell back into the easy rhythm of his day. As he passed the Butcher’s shop, he lingered for a moment to knock in the grate to the basement with his cane. A bolt of white and brown shot inside, yipping loudly to announce his presence. Frans, the long deceased Butcher’s Blade of the Barrel, must be waiting with his spectral pup’s dinner by now after all. The current shop owner shut all the windows and grates to keep out the chill, so it was up to Kaz to let Kipper in each day. Sometimes he lingered longer to give Kipper a good scratch behind the ears, but he was behind schedule already."

For the first time in a very long while, Wylan was able to think of Ketterdam as a place of comfort. Of beautiful sites to see and food to try. Expansive skylines that colored a silky blue haze as the day settled in, and the sound of rolling waves audible even deep in the city. It was where he and his pack had carved out a home for themselves, and he was excited to show it to these trusted people.

Out of everyone here, Kaz was probably the only other person who knew exactly what her heat would do to her. Why she couldn’t trust the people she loved. The betrayal at her own gender, her own body’s reactions at a thing she despised and lusted for in equal measure. Kaz knew already that no story told in the Slat could quite compare to the sight of her, and was proven right months later when she visited him as he slept. A shadow of his own rage, his own pain. Face twisted into something inhuman, unrecognizable to the naked eye. They had no need to share words with each other, for a horrible understanding stood between them both. Hollow beings filled themselves with whatever they could get a hold of, and they were both so very hollow in the wake of what they had been through."
