Summary
They didn’t sneak out often; everyone in Caldera knew their faces, so it was impossible to do at home. But when they were traveling, and wanted to feel normal, they would go out in disguise, and Mai would inevitably get hit on by men who at best, ignored Zuko’s presence, and at worst, degraded him. Mai let out another sigh, pondering what to do to salvage their evening; and then, she noticed the man was still focused on them. She immediately thought of a way to both get revenge on the creep, and get the night back on track.
“Why don’t we prove it?” she whispered huskily, leaning in close, “He’s staring. Let’s give him something to stare at.” She grabbed Zuko by the collar, and leaned further over the table to capture his lips in hers.

“Are you insane?!” she yelled in as quiet a voice as possible.
He hooked her wrist behind her back and pulled her close to himself. “You’re insane.” His breathing was heavy, uneven. “If you thought I was just going to stand there while you let him touch you.”

Zuko reached up, fingers catching the loose strand just before it could touch the chutney on the bao. He tucked it behind her ear with casualness. His hand lingered for a millisecond too long along her jawline, where Mai knew she hadn’t imagined his thumb swiping the edge of her mouth.
Crumb. She told herself quickly. The warmth of the bao still clung to her mouth, and now his scent was wrapped up in it, too.
She moved back a little, reasserting distance. Her expression stayed neutral. The bite was good. The chutney was sweet and tart. The pork was well-spiced. Perfect balance. She hated that she could barely enjoy any of it in the frenzied state of her mind.
It wasn’t lost on him how purposefully she avoided his gaze this entire time.
