It felt that every time he closed his eyes he saw flashes of the battlefield. Blood, his own and others, thick on his hands while the smell of death suffocated his senses. It felt all too vivid for it not to be real, it had been real, but once he opened his eyes he was back in his chambers staring up at the dull ceiling."

Summary
Thorin had fought for Erebor for years that were painted dark and red in his memories, had given more than any crown could ever repay, and suffered beyond what should have broken him. And for a brief, fleeting moment, it had been his.
He had spent so many years shaping Fíli to be exactly what a king needed to be – sharpening him, refining him, pressing him into the mold of duty and expectations. So many years for a crown that Fíli would never feel the weight of.
And Kíli had grown – sharper, taller, faster. Louder. There was more of him now: more noise, more light, more life. He had become someone unrecognizable from the quiet boy he had once been.
Or, everything that goes through Thorin’s head in the few minutes between being stabbed and dying.

A courtesy, you noticed, he never extended to Kili. Even now, as you sat amongst the others in Erebor’s halls, bruised, scorched and battle worn, it seemed he would forevermore see you as simply his fragile little sister.
