He almost deleted the voicemail as soon as what he had just done hit him. His heart was beating so fast it made him dizzy, he felt heat creeping up on his face and a rising panic settling under his skin. He needed to sit down. While running his hands through his hair, face down between his legs, he kept going over his words. That was the most honest Shane had allowed himself to be with anyone, let alone Ilya. He was forever grateful for the knowledge that Ilya would never listen to that.

Summary
Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.
Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.
His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.
But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"
By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.
But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…
Shane says yes.
And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

The nuclear bomb that was Hollanov had completely wiped out any other hockey gossip, but Harris remembered why Troy had been traded here. He’d been traded suddenly at the last possible second, played the last few weeks of the season like a robot. He’d been there. Like the benches were there. Like the adverts on the boards were there. He skated. He caught and passed the puck. He still kept up with Rozanov enough to assist in a few points at the end of the season. Then he’d fucked off for the summer, disappearing. This year, he’d showed up the same way, just a guy in a practice uniform. But he always had shadows under his eyes, and one time had smelled like liquor when he zoomed by Harris as he stood in the team box snapping photos for the instagram.
Hollanov was a much bigger story than Troy Barrett forgetting how to play hockey. No one seemed to remember he was even here. Not even Troy.Or: Troy works out his heartbreak by slutting around. Then maybe he finds a better way to cope.

If Montreal wants to get rid of a generational player, he's not about to stop them, especially if it means he can get a little closer to joy.

Troy Barrett has always been sensitive, it's something his father tried and failed to beat out of him. It was engrained into his very bones, but he'd learnt to push it down to only crack once alone. He laughed with the jokes, joined Dallas's name calling, or starting fights, and trained hard.
He'd done everything he could to keep his job stable in his team. And he'd been traded, to fucking Ottawa after making the dumb decision to tell Coach that Dallas was being weird. He could have handled it, but he had to go and tell.
Ilya Rozanov was an arsehole, but a carefully curated one. He didn't act like Barrett did, he was careful, and now said arsehole was going to be part of their team.

Troy gets traded to Ottawa sooner than cannon, and I just give Troy a million and one of my health issues, and we pretend he'd be clear to play and drive with these. -
