this is a ‘what if’ for that one scene where Jax started doing the thing. Aka, you know the bit where you (hopefully internally) screamed at the screen ‘JAX, STOP BEING AN ASSHOLE WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?’ Yeah. This is Jax not doing that.

Summary
Jax gets mad at Ragatha trying to talk with Zooble and Gangle, but Ragatha reacts way worse than he expects. Before Zooble can start a fight, Caine inturrupts them with a new adventure, and Jax is eager for a distraction. Now, Jax and Ragatha are forced to depend on the others on an infested spaceship while they try to sort themselves out, and they learn how everyone really feels about them, how much they can trust them.

At that, Jax gave her a long look as his mouth narrowed out into a little line. Then he sighed quietly. It wasn't the way he used to sigh, with dramatic posturing that begged the attention from anyone even remotely listening. It was small. Tired. Reflexive. Then he sat down with his knees to his chest, glaring into the dark water. The only light here, a single streetlamp, glowed weakly.
"Denial is an ugly color on you. Clashes with your stupid hat."
"Jax — "
"I'm gone," he snapped. His voice echoed in the abyss. "Don't you get it? No one comes back from Abstraction. You're not saving me, you're not helping me grow. All you're doing is keeping my body from rotting." Jax's hands worked their way up to his head, squeezing as he growled, "You're talking to a ghost."

Jax is spiraling fast after the favorite character awards and unlike the others, nobody really wants to try and catch him. He would rather self destruct alone than try and reach out. He was so assured of himself that he was fine and if it was the end, then he was going out without dragging anyone else with him. Or so he thinks.

Summary
Arthur knows he's dying, can feel the unstoppable pull of it, feels the spirit appear behind him to take him along. And yet, he finds he does not want to die. There is so much that went wrong, so much he regrets and he wishes, with all his being, he could change it. Could at least ensure those that managed to get away really make it out alive.
A second chance, he asks, begs, really. Just give me the chance to save them.
The being behind him pauses and Arthur can't look away from the moment he's frozen in, staring at the dark mountainside, aching to see the sun rise just one more time.
One chance, the spirit seems to whisper, voice satin soft. Make the most of it.
