His only other comfort, besides a cozy burrow hidden away from the prying world, was the favor he’d asked of his long-time rival, Shadow. With hybrid genetics and Chaos in his veins, Shadow wouldn’t need to bed down for the winter storm of the century.
Just three months without the blue hedgehog. That was it.
Shadow only managed two weeks before he went to check on him.

Spock, who doesn't believe in such unfounded theories— and certainly not in ghosts— sees no harm in accompanying Kirk, if for no reason other than to protect him from his own imagination.
Inspired by the X-Files episode "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" (can be read whether or not you've seen it).
