Blinking his eyes open to adjust to the darkness, he sits up, rubbing his eyes and decidedly not yelping when he sees a figure sitting in the chair by the desk. Hurriedly flicking on the lamp next to him, he realises that it’s Barnes.
“Uh,” Sam says, swallowing dryly, “hi.”
Falling in love with a ghost wasn't ever easy. Fortunately for them, Sam Wilson doesn't do easy, and Bucky Barnes isn't a ghost.

Ava piped in, annoyed. “He was, idiot.”
“Uh, no,” John laughs. “Cause he just said ‘I love you,’ so it’s obviously not Sam.”
Bucky rubs his temple. “How much did you guys hear?”

The first time it happens, they’re in Wakanda.
“You're bored,” Bucky murmurs, low. Hears how gravelly it comes out, exactly the smoke-filled tone he used to use to achieve a very particular purpose. “Wanna do something dumb?”
“Like what?” Sam asks, flat. Bucky grins, just a little, sharp.
“I can think of a few things,” he says, and steps closer, watches how Sam doesn't step away. They're in each other's space, and Bucky knows goddamn better than this, knows he put himself away in Bucharest for a reason, but fuck, he's tired and he's pissed off and he's reckless, and so is Sam, energy bouncing between them. “For instance,” Bucky says, waits a beat. “I'm pretty dumb,” and hears Sam's breathing speed up.

Sam strips down to his briefs, slips on his sweats because he’s a gentleman like that, thank you very much, then rolls onto his side of the bed where he comes face-to-face with Bucky.
“Uh.” Sam blinks. Bucky blinks back at him. “You’re gonna turn around, right?” Sam asks. If they’re really being forced to share a bed, he refuses to be the little spoon.
“I’m taller,” Bucky says immediately.
“We’re the same height.”
“Nah, I’m definitely taller.”
“Why does that even matter?” Sam asks incredulously.
