I want to tell you a story—the most extraordinary one, in the quietest voice I can find. Like Rose from Titanic. When I finished that film, the part that stayed with me, the heaviest part, wasn't the sinking or the goodbye. It was the beginning: old Rose, with that sly little smile, telling her story to the salvage crew.
Eighty-plus years between Rose and Jack. That "sediment" of time—I can't get over it.
Objectively, Rose was barely twenty when she met Jack. They had only a few days together. She went on to live past a hundred—rode horses on the beach, rode roller coasters, flew airplanes, married, raised children. She lived a whole life. But in her heart, it was all still right there. When her life finally reached its end, she was keeping her promise to Jack. So we see her lie back, close her eyes—and Jack is exactly as she left him.
This story belongs to Simon Riley.
Back when he was still with Task Force 141. For reasons he couldn't help, he did things that can never be forgiven.
