The land of Gemeinplatz is a land filled with fantastical creatures, adventurers looking to slay them, and heroes looking to distinguish themselves from the adventurers. The most common of these heroes are those who come from Earth, who enjoy a most leisurely time with their cheat skills. It’s a perfect world, the utopia of those who wish to become overpowered and get their own power fantasy, where even the most everyman of the everyman can pull themselves by their bootstraps and become a hero.
To satisfy the needs of heroes who can’t find function like a normal human being (which most of them can’t), the lucrative Gemeinplatz slave trade crushes the dreams and ruins the lives of hundreds every day. These slaves endlessly labor, in the harems of so-called heroes, at the mansions of the landowning “heroes”, and as rare materials for various dubious magical spells.
In a world that looks down at them as demi-human, where the ruling class has no incentive to end this profitable trade, in which their oppressors are overpowered as all hell, what hope is there for the slaves?
What hope is there, is named John Brown. This time, he’ll finish what he started.

This fic is sometimes the most unserious and stupid thing you've probably ever read, and other times it delves into serious themes which will have you questioning if this is in fact a crack fic. Have fun!

There’s a word for it, Daryl knows, for the smell before rain. His earth science teacher had said it one day. Daryl’d written it down and then the teacher had pretended to keel over with shock. A Dixon, taking notes? Just for that Daryl doesn’t want to remember the word, doesn’t want to like it. But he remembers anyway. Petrichor.
He’s thinking of this, half drowsy on top of Merle’s stained sleeping bag, when they come.

“I didn’t want you to have to see me like this.” Edwin eventually says. His voice comes out wet, and he looks pitifully at Charles with wide and red rimmed eyes.
Charles’ heart nearly breaks in two. He takes another few steps forward until he can kneel down across from Edwin, taking one of Edwin’s hands into both of his. Edwin focuses intently on their interlocked fingers, as if trying to work out how they could possibly fit together.
“I’m sorry I didn’t notice.” Charles tells him, rubbing a thumb back and forth along Edwin’s knuckles.

"Um. Dunno. S’okay,” Daryl says awkwardly when it becomes clear she’s waiting for some kind of response. “Ain’t like - don’t really think nobody’ll wanna sign it anyway. So."
Instead of getting the kid to let up, this statement seems to somehow capture her interest. She uncurls in the chair a little, looking at him with a wide-open face. “Why not?"
But he’s saved from having to answer that by Carol the desk lady, who breaks into a little half-run when she sees Daryl waiting. “Sorry, sorry - just had to step away for a moment, sorry about that, Daryl.”
“S’fine,” Daryl mumbles. She doesn’t have to apologize to him for taking a piss or whatever, good Lord.

"I just think you need to give him a chance! He's really nice once you get past all the grumpiness!" Niko announced as they sat down in the booth Charles had snagged for them in this smallish café.
Crystal rolled her eyes in response and slammed her drink and food down. "I already gave him a chance and he was a dick!"
"But you can still give him another one! You can't believe all the things spread about him, he's so sweet, a little awkward but he's really nice!" Niko protested.
Before Crystal could retaliate about why she couldn't do that, Charles spoke up. Putting his hand up like he was back in Secondary. "Who are we talking about?"
"Edwin Payne, a rich asshole who's in Niko's course." Crystal bit out.
The name was like a gut punch to Charles' stomach.
After losing contact with Edwin in secondary school, Charles never expects to see him again. Charles finds him anyway. And maybe he can finally figure it all out.

It's Air, though, that captivates Charles’s attention: the boy is tall and graceful and pale, and seems to float, his feet barely touching the ground, showcasing astonishing feats of skill and athleticism. He spins and jumps so high, it seems as if he has wings.

Then he’d gone and died, and the only person he could feel anymore wasn’t big on touch. 35 years on, he finally figures out Edwin’s trick, and decides to do some testing to make sure he’s got it right.
Or, five times Charles gets hurt so Edwin will touch him, plus one time he just asks like a normal person.
Or-or, five times Charles puts himself in Situations and Edwin gently takes him back out, plus one time Edwin very gently (and consensually) puts him in a Situation they both very much enjoy.

“Seems easy enough.” Charles can’t help but appreciate the potential of a simple case.
It’s been longer than either of them would admit, since they had anything close to an easy win, job well jobbed, et cetera. Everything since Port Townsend has felt heavy, with the weight of someone’s existence always hanging in the balance: hell and Esther Finch and Niko.
They could all use this, Charles thinks. A distraction, a boost. Anything, really, to get Edwin out of the office and away from the things putting shadows under his eyes. Here, at least, it might be something Charles can hit.
A new case and recurring thoughts about Edwin's collarbones remind Charles of the past. Aka, Charles Rowland's bisexual awakening, repression, and subsequent reawakening.

To his surprise, Edwin found that he quite enjoyed kissing; the intimacy was warm and pleasurable, and the act of it was fun. He and Charles had spent over thirty years getting to know each other in every other way possible, and now he got to explore a side of his partner that he had never seen before. They had both been quite taken in by the notion that this was an option now available to them, and Edwin was enjoying every moment of it.
Perhaps his time spent in the Lust layers of Hell had no effect on him, after all. Maybe his tortured mind had finally caught a break.
