"Does it bother you? The—" Hob gestured vaguely towards the front door, encompassing Max and, by extension, the entire catalogue of bodies that had preceded him through it. "All of them. Does it bother you?"
Yes, Dream thought, with a force and immediacy that startled him. Yes, it bothers me. Every face, every mark on every throat, every time I arrive to find the space around you already occupied by someone whose presence I must accommodate before I can have you to myself—
"No," he said. "Why would it?"

Summary
Dream is given a second chance. Terrified by loneliness and drowning in humanity, he goes to find the only fixed point he has ever known. Hob Gadling.
Dream found himself explaining everything, the words tumbling out of him in a halting confession. The Kindly Ones, the choice to end or change. His siblings’ intervention.
“They… found a compromise. This form, it is mortal-adjacent. I must eat, sleep and breathe. I feel the cold. I grow weary.” He looked down at his own hands, pale against the dark fabric of his trousers. “I am, in all ways that matter now, very much like you, Hob Gadling. My body will not age. It cannot die. Unless I choose to accept my sister’s gift. I am… suspended. Between what I was and what men are.”

Summary
In the year 1916, Roderick Burgess attempts to summon and capture Death. He misses his mark by quite a way, but he’s never been one to waste an opportunity.
Dream of the Endless was friend-zoned back in 1889. He does not get captured in 1916. The Dreaming remains in good order. He has never been more powerful.
And in 1916, Hob Gadling is just a soldier, until he isn’t. Immortality, it seems, has its pitfalls.
Oh, and The Corinthian? He’s having a wonderful time.
It’s the “Roderick Burgess Somehow Got Hob Instead Of Dream When He Did The Summoning” fic that you didn’t know you needed.

Summary
“Right.” Matthew ruffles his feathers, huffing a breath. “Look, boss, unless you made him mopier on purpose or something, I just… I think the Corinthian's sad.”
Dream almost dismisses the thought out of hand. A nightmare, sad? It is preposterous. He should tell Matthew his concerns are unfounded, that nightmares are happy to fulfill their functions by design, that –
And then he remembers Gault, and her desire to become a dream, her dissatisfaction with being a nightmare. He remembers the agony etched on the Corinthian’s face in the last moments before Dream unmade him. And he thinks that, perhaps, he should heed Matthew’s warning.

Summary
Matthew eyes him with blatant disrespect. "You're one of those," he says. "One of those monsterfucker people. Gets off on tentacles and shit."
"Tentacles," Hob says, affronted. "There's never been any tentacles."
"Have you asked?"
