Summary
The heat is overwhelming once back in the car, but Kevin bears it only for the shivering form in the backseat. He keeps an eye on him, glancing into the rearview as often as he can while maintaining safety as he drives, but Peralta never notices. Raymond's coat is almost comically large on him—the sleeves hanging over his palms and the shoulders too wide for the young man's smaller frame. It would be reminiscent of a little boy playing dress up in his dad's clothing if it weren't for the fact that Peralta is not only an adult, but one that they had found near frozen on a bench in the middle of the night. His head is down, wet hair dripping rivulets onto his face, and his arms are wrapped tightly around his body like a lonely hug.
It's such a pitiful sight that Kevin feels something inside of him crack. Raymond's hand, still a little cold from being outside, slips into his and squeezes.
“You know,” Peralta's voice cuts through the silence of the car, “my dad showed up again.”Or
Jake's dad returns and causes an upheaval in his life that no one is sure he can come back from.

The first thought John can muster as he inches back to consciousness is that Marigold has never thrown him so hard before. He is pressed to the ground, cheek against concrete rather than dirt, and when he blinks, it's dark. He must have been lying here for a while, or else he set out riding far too late. Father will be angry. It isn't right for the heir apparent to be prancing around on a pony anyways, let alone past curfew.

There are so many things in the trauma room explicitly grasping for Kerry's attention. The patient on the table, yelling out as the team tries to keep him restrained. The monitors attached to his chest, wailing and flashing their discontentment at an abnormally rapid heart rate. Every few seconds, one of the nurses shoots her a question about the dosage of haldol required, or whether she wants hard or soft restraints, or her opinion on the cause of the man's obvious agitation: psychoactive drugs, maybe? A head injury? Infection? Plain old ETOH?
As she turns her mind to each of these things, though, she has to consciously force it away from what it really wants to monitor. John Carter.
OR
Following his return to work post-stabbing, Kerry notices Carter isn't doing well.

“Shh, hey, don't worry about that. Don't worry about that, man. I came to check on you.” He finds his voice has softened to barely more than a whisper. “I heard- I heard you were sick.”
Carter looses a weak scoff, eyes fluttering closed. “G-got stabbed. S’not usually conducive to good health.”
Peter rolls his eyes, though a small smile creeps to his face anyway at the confirmation that yes, despite everything, Carter is still somehow here. Breathing and talking and joking. A far cry from the lifeless weight against Peter’s palms when he rolled him over in the trauma room, unconscious and barely breathing.
OR
Carter gets sick at home following the stabbing, and Peter comes to check on him.

He breathes through the confusion and the hurt as he stalks out of the cafeteria.
Peter's having trouble settling into his pedes rotation; if only he understood the secret everyone else seems to know already.
