Summary
He barely managed to lay eyes on her before hands clamped down onto his arms and shoulders, and chaos erupted around them once again. Guns flew up as fists were thrown, and distantly, Mike heard his name among cries and other yelling, but when he lunged toward his friends, the hands on him tightened, preventing him from running to them.
It took him another second to realize they weren't just holding him back. They were pulling him away.
Post El's "death," Mike and the rest of the party are detained by Dr. Kay and the military. When Mike is separated from them, he is forced to deal with an off-the-rails Dr. Kay and an angry Sergeant holding a grudge.

“Jezz, you’re jumpy,” a voice dripping with sarcasm said, and Max Mayfield stepped out into the moonlight, her red hair looking maroon. “Do you really think your fists would do anything if I was a demodog?” She chirped, a wry smile forming.
“I thought you were asleep,” he growled with a glare at her.
“Night owl,” she said with a ‘obviously you idiot’ lit to her voice that Mike sneered at. “What, did you think I was going to leave anyone alone after what happened to Will?”
“I don’t need a babysitter,” he huffed again, “I do this. Nothing ever comes.”

Mike and Max are night owls, so they slowly become friends after everyone else is asleep.

Suddenly, all at once, the grief hit her in a wave so fierce that her knees buckled. A sob tore itself from her lungs as she crumbled to the floor, her skateboard slipping from her fingers and hit the tile with a loud clatter. Mike jolted and grabbed her as she fell, and without really thinking, she latched onto her friend and hid her face in his shoulder.
Billy was dead.
Billy was really dead.
Mike’s arms wrapped around her after a few seconds, his chin now resting on her shoulder as she sobbed into his.
It felt like she was dying.
