Summary
The “love of the self” had always been a blanket of comfort, a way to protect against the criticisms and cynical opinions that other people held. To only love oneself was to ignore the welfare of those around you in order to guarantee your own well-being.
Shu wasn’t aware of how difficult this mindset was to break until the opportunity had suddenly made itself known.
