The words hang between them, echoing off the walls.
For the first time during their conversation, Mydei can see Khaslana falter. His golden eyes widen and his mouth parts before closing again, his response caught in his throat.

Summary
Phainon leans into his touch, his eyelashes fluttering over his cheeks as his eyes close, his own hand closing over Mydei’s wrist as he nuzzles at the touch, placing a gentle claim of his scent on the lion — a scent of freshness mixed with that hint of sweetness… only the sweetness grows stronger. Realisation settles over Mydei’s face as he draws his hand away from Phainon’s face as if he’s been burned.
“HKS,” Mydei hisses. “You’re in heat? Are you a fool? Are you trying to cause trouble for yourself?”
“I —”
“Save your excuses. I’m taking you back to the palace.”
As always, Phainon bites off more than he can chew.

Summary
“You’re beautiful, Deliverer,” Mydei murmurs. It sounds like an act of worship, reverent in a way that shouldn’t be for someone like him.
A dam has broken. Phainon can’t stop the choked sob that falls from his lips, tears flooding down his cheeks. Mydei’s lips are warm against his feverish, marred skin. It feels wrong, almost like he’s dirtying Mydei with his impurity.
“You’re lying,” Phainon whispers, the beginnings of hysteria forming in his throat. “Don’t—”
Mydei shushes him, and he quiets. The alpha continues to press soft kisses against his damaged mating gland, and little by little, Phainon begins to melt.
A broken omega like him will never be loved. His scent offends, and his cycles are violent and irregular. Nothing about him is sweet or soft. Since the moment Phainon set foot in Okhema, he’s known he’s unlovable.
Mydei proves him otherwise.

Little affections and lively banter rapidly waterfall into Phainon donning dive gear for more involved company. There’s no rule against becoming friends with the sirens, he thinks, and Mydei called him chicken on only going in when he’s transferred for tank maintenance. Phainon indulged him in the slow hand-to-mouth feeding Mydei likes, as strangely romantic as it felt, and amid the soft gazes and water races that feel a lot more like…dancing…Phainon ends up on his back under Mydei, pinned to the tank’s catwalk.
“Um,” he says.
“‘Um’,” Mydei echoes in a sharp echo, and laughs. “What, bluefin? Something wrong?”
