Sometimes, Mira feels it is safer to snap at a hand before determining whether it is one that feeds or one that hurts. Hunger pangs were bearable, familiar. She had been starved of love and affection for most of her life anyways.
Zoey isn't able to suppress the whimper that escapes her as Rumi's eyes flit to hers. There are thousands of thoughts racing through her head, most of them filled with hurt, confusion, and betrayal. A smaller, instinctual part of Zoey's mind that she's starting to think she might hate sees the patterns winding across Rumi's skin and whispers: prey.
Something in Rumi has always been feral and wrong. Measured affection and careful training can only do so much to suppress instinct. (You can take the animal out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the animal.)
(Aka these characters are so dog-coded in different ways and I wanted to explore that a little.)

As soon as Falin had set her arms down on the table, Marcille reached out to gently touch her elbow. She liked to do that, Falin noticed, to run her fingers along the feathers of her arms. It felt nice, so she always let her.
“Mm-mm,” Falin shook her head. “You’re not.”
“You’ll tell me when you want to go?”
“I will.”
It’s not a novel action—a habit from when they were younger—but today was a confusing day for Falin and all she could do was stare at their hands while a prickling heat traveled up her neck—a foreign and curious feeling.

Marcille wakes up on a sunny field, flattened grass around her as she sits up to survey her surroundings. There’s a patch of brightly coloured flowers around her, and the remains of a soft voice in her ear: Sleep, Marcille. A few metres away, Chilchuck is laying under the shade of a large tree, and Laios is spread-eagled further away from them.
Fuck. Again. Again, again, again; she reaches into her pocket to pull out her notebook, sees the plethora of scratches in the inside of the leather binding, sighs in barely-contained frustration and pent-up grief as she uses a fingernail to make a new mark, before flipping it shut and getting up to wake the others.
“One hundred and thirty-two,” she murmurs to herself, just as Laios begins to stir.

From a personal standpoint, however, it was more than a little embarrassing to admit that she was burning hot with jealousy for a stupid freaking cat.
(Or, Izutsumi is only here for the pets, Falin misreads the situation, and Marcille has no idea why they can't just get along.)
