Summary
I want you to kiss me," Eddie said, the words tumbling out in a rush. "I need you to kiss me, Buck. Please."
Buck's free hand came up to cup Eddie's face, his thumb brushing across Eddie's cheekbone. "You're sure? Because once we do this, once we cross this line—"
"I'm sure." Eddie leaned into Buck's touch, his eyes falling closed for a moment. "I've never been more sure of anything."
Buck made a sound low in his throat, and then he was closing the distance between them. Eddie's eyes flew open just as Buck's lips touched his, and the world tilted on its axis.
The kiss was soft at first, tentative, like they were both afraid of breaking something precious. Buck's lips were warm and gentle against Eddie's, and Eddie felt something in his chest crack open, eight years of denial and fear and longing pouring out all at once.
Eddie's hands came up to grip Buck's hoodie, pulling him closer, and the kiss deepened. Buck's tongue traced the seam of Eddie's lips and Eddie opened for him, gasping at the first touch of Buck's tongue against his

Summary
“I can’t keep doing this, Eddie. Your sweatpants are in my dresser. You buy the right spices at the farmer’s market for my recipes. You wear the monstrosities I knit for you. You hold my kid’s hand when we’re crossing the street.”
Eddie’s lips are at the hinge of his jaw, like he’s testing the waters. It makes Buck brave enough to bring a numb hand up to one of the belt loops on Eddie’s darkwash jeans, thumbing there restlessly—sliding the tips of his fingers under the hem of his obsidian button-down. The skin-to-skin contact is all at once relieving.
“I think we’ve both known what we are for a while now,” Buck goads, hushed; tilting to arch his neck back against the wall, granting Eddie unlimited access, praying he takes the explicit invitation. “You’re my best friend. But this isn’t sustainable.”
or: Buck's sick of pretending.

Summary
“Is something wrong? Should I call the doctor back?”
Eddie shakes his head. “No, no, I think I’m good to go just…” he hesitates, knowing his next words will inevitably sting. “Who are you? No one’s told me.”
He watches the man’s face freeze, but it doesn't fall. No, his mouth goes stiff in a way that probably means he’s trying to hold back his emotions, and doing a pretty good job, all things considered. He forces his face into a friendly smile.
“I’m Buck. Buck Bu - well, Evan Buckley, but everyone calls me Buck. We met at work, like seven years ago. We’re firefighters. I’m, well, I’m your partner.”
Partner.
Oh, wow.
Eddie has never heard a better word. This man, this beautiful man, clearly kind too, by the way he paid devoted attention to Eddie’s discharge instructions and held back his sadness and fear to stay strong for Eddie – this man is his partner. They were together.
Or:
Eddie wakes up with amnesia and meets Buck, who introduces himself as Eddie’s partner. Isn’t it funny how a word can have two different meanings?

Summary
Except the firehouse doesn’t have a weighted blanket.
It does, however, have—
“Buck?” Eddie tilts his head back against the couch cushion, looking at Buck sitting at the dining table with the cap of his pen between his teeth.
“Hm?” He looks up from the crossword, glancing at Eddie.
“What’s up?”
“Can you come here for a second?”
“Okay, sure.”
Buck caps the pen and drops it on the table with a clatter. His chair scrapes against the floor of the loft with a sound that makes Eddie’s teeth ache. Each step Buck takes across the loft rattles Eddie’s bones to the point that a Jack and the Beanstalk joke sits on the tip of his tongue.
***********
OR Eddie turns Buck into his personal weighted blanket.
