Dean’s breath hitches, because all he wants right now is to pull him in and kiss him until neither of them can breathe anymore - and now, Cas needs to breathe, because he’s human, and that means that he can’t fly away and heaven can’t rip him away from Dean and-
“I understand that you do not feel the same way. I apologize for ruining any goodwill you still had for me; I am aware that humans have…complex norms about what can and cannot be said aloud. I’ll leave now. Goodnight, Dean.”
And then Cas is getting up, Cas is walking away from Dean and in his mind’s eye, Dean can see every fragile, pathetic dream of them being together shatter under the weight of his footfalls. He wants to scream out, wants to wrap his arms around his angel and pull him back and show him exactly how much he loves him even if Cas didn’t mean it that way and it’ll probably ruin Cas’ life even more.
