Rey is heir to the kingdom, though for now the crown rests in the hands of Snoke, the king regent, a man far more interested in keeping power than preparing her to rule.
Life at court is unbearable. Dull, suffocating, endless. Until someone tries to kill her.
She barely survives, saved only by Ben Solo, the formidable commander of the Crown Guard. As a reward for his bravery, the court appoints him as her personal guard.
Which is unfortunate, because Rey is fairly certain he hates her.
Cold, severe, and impossible to please, Ben shadows her every step. He seems determined to make her life even more intolerable than it already was.
Ben Solo has everything he thought he wanted. After leaving his family behind, he rebuilt his name through discipline and blood, rising through the army until he earned his place as commander of the Crown Guard. His rank is secure. His honor restored. His future, at last, belongs to him.
If only he were not so distracted by the princess.
And if only someone at court did not want her dead.

Rey couldn’t remember what the last thing she saw was. Come to think of it, she couldn’t think of what the last thing she heard was either. All she could remember was what she felt.
She had come to this ship. Willingly. To try to…it sounded idiotic now. She had come here because she thought Ben Solo could change. But now, after everything, she saw that he wouldn’t.

Or in other words, a slowburn, angst filled, enemies to friends to enemies to friends? to lovers fic that we all need.
I basically just rewrote the end of The Last Jedi into all of The Rise of Skywalker because I could NOT accept that as what they went with.
