Summary
"As a child, Beatrice would convince herself that the magic of her birthday would make it all happy: her parents would celebrate it with her and smile and sing her the song and watch her blow on her candles. Sometimes, in her most delusional moments, she would believe that they would play with her, or read her a story, or laugh and tell her silly things about when she was a baby, and she would go to sleep with a happy smile on her face.
The human brain is a cruel thing, and even though she knew it would never happen, she couldn't help but hope and pray for it. The best birthday she had ever had was when they completely forgot about it, and she spent the day alone in the house, sitting on the stairs and waiting for her parents to come home and hoping it was actually a surprise. It never was. "
Or: Beatrice hates birthdays. Ava helps her through it. There's a six year old and a dog thrown in the middle of it too.

Summary
(She thinks of her, and she thinks of her: Oh, let me be your undoing, and they don’t always get a chance to try.
But then it’s perhaps especially that there’s no time; perhaps there’s some sick passion in the idea of never enough. Perhaps that’s why they’re always brought together eventually. Doomed to see, to touch, to care; destined never to stay. Destined never to just exist.
Very rarely do they get the lives they deserve.)

Summary
Never before an optimist, the feeling of hope used to be somewhat of a foreign concept for Beatrice. It had always been considered impolite to wish for more than she was given, for she had been taught that greed was a sin against God.
Despite this, and against her initial resistance, hope had settled deep in her chest that day, on those steps, some time ago, and never left. It’d festered there — grown, stretched, and spread, like a rash. Hope rooted itself in every fiber of her being, gaining strength even as the time away from Ava lengthened; almost parasitic the way it burrowed so far down into her skin that it reached the innermost part of her. It stuck to her, like sweat, persistent in its very nature. She hoped for Ava every day — and she hated it.

Summary
Beatrice burrows her face into the pillow beneath her and cracks an eye open to look at Ava, the other half of her face fully smushed into the pillow, and Ava feels her heart beat particularly hard at the visual; an acute tha-thump on the off-beat, and she knows that she’s helpless to reign in her affection.

Summary
Beatrice closes her eyes tight and reaches under her jumper to thumb the cross of her necklace and whispers a silent prayer.
“Come home.”
Or Avatrice at Christmas, with fluff and a little splash of angst because i'm feeling devious.
