Just before the last day of term, Ethel reveals to Miss Hardbroom the truth about her mother. Miss Hardbroom and Miss Pentangle take Sybil and her in for the summer, where Ethel will slowly began to heal and discover what it is like to be truly loved.
"Ethel kept watching, unsure what was her purpose now that she didn’t have to protect Sybil anymore. And she didn’t have to, because Sybil was brighter than she ever was. Always joyful, quickly bonding with the women that cared for her. Soon, hugs and gentles touch of affection were becoming a daily occurence, Sybil running straight into Pippa’s arms once back in the house after an afternoon in the garden, or sitting close to Hecate and leaning against her as she read in the evening. She wasn’t used to this."

“There is something I need to discuss,” Miranda says, her voice steady but tinged with a crack. She clears her throat and clasps her hands tightly.
“It’s of sensitive nature and it might lead to our separation,” she adds abruptly, her gaze fixed on the floor, avoiding Andrea’s eyes.

In the meantime, Mildred is convinced she ruined Miss Hardbroom's life while Hecate is struggling to tell her the truth. When Pippa finds out what has happened to her friend, she asks the Hubbles to help her on her quest to make Hecate see sense. If only the woman wasn't so terribly bad at communicating...

Hecate tries not to drag her feet as they come closer to the group gathered around a long table covered in sweets and drinks. She wishes she could have a few more minutes alone with Pippa, at least enough to get her bearings; but it’s Pippa’s birthday, and she refuses to be selfish. Refuses to bring down Pippa’s bright mood with her own dourness and insecurities. She even does her best to smile, a small, tense lift of her lips that makes her face feel hot and her jaw clench.
