Phainon scoffs, lip pulled back in a snarl that is more endearing than it is intimidating. "Does playing with your food usually make it taste better?"
Mydei hums, pretending to actually consider Phainon's question. "That depends," he rumbles, voice pitched to a depth he usually reserves for his more stubborn quarry.
"On?" His voice is strained again. Forcing the word out before he swallows dryly, eyes searching—is he in danger, or is the alpha simply toying with him? It lends itself well to what he's asking, he supposes.
"Whether it will heighten the thrill of the chase."
It's just Phainon's luck that a lion wanders into his personal sanctuary, almost drowns, and then—for whatever reason—keeps coming back.

Summary
Joining a harsh organization like the Fatui just as you start hitting the worst of puberty means growing up around soldiers with rather bad habits. And those bad habits tend to rub off and linger even when you long outranked and outlived the people who encouraged it in you.
Childe had picked up smoking quite young in his military career, but kept it a secret considering how contrary it was to his warrior-like nature. Until one rare indulgent evening turns into a different indulgence when Zhongli finds and lectures his mate for partaking in the unsavory habit high above in the balconies of Liyue Harbor.
