She’d tried to explain it to her friends over margaritas at girls night out. They’d looked at each other with concern and then one of them had said softly, seriously, that you weren’t supposed to be actually afraid of your boyfriend. “Says who?” she’d replied, as though ‘fear’ described the hot tide of her blood. As though Nevada would ever be anybody’s ‘boyfriend.’
