“He’s making a mess.” Beron moves into view, and Eris shrinks back instinctively. His father is tall and broad-shouldered. He looks immaculate in his pressed shirt and tie, even though it’s a Saturday. He looks at the eggshells scattered on the counter, the flour dusting the front of Eris’s pajamas, and his mouth thins into a line that Eris has learned means displeasure. “How is he supposed to learn how to behave if you let him play in the kitchen?”
“He’s four, Beron.”
“Old enough to know better.” His father’s eyes fix on Eris, cold and assessing. “Aren’t you?”
