With summer right around the corner, the air still had a chill to it and she shivered slightly, but didn’t want to go inside just yet. They’d been home and free for a few months now, certain bad actors locked up half a world away, and she wanted to take advantage of every second she could bask in the sun’s glow.

The violent snap of her seatbelt locking against her chest.
The sound of Ted promising he’ll wait outside for her.
The headlights fill the windshield.Her hands move before she decides and the car moves with them and she gets almost a bit of the road between them, but she knows it's not enough.
There’s just enough time for one silly thought to flicker through her mind.I’m going to be late for dinner.

The knock on Rebecca’s office door is habitual. Ted’s done this a hundred times before, in the morning with biscuits, in the evening with stories about his day and it is always the same.
Except today, it isn’t.
He pushes the ajar door open, expecting Rebecca to be immersed in paperwork or emails, a tea cup on her desk but the sight stops him cold.
She isn’t alone.
Matthijs is there, standing close as she gathers her belongings, laughing at something he’s said. The sound hits Ted like a sucker punch.
Rebecca’s laugh has never hurt before.
This is a story about how two years apart changed Ted and Rebecca's bond.

Rebecca’s contact photo pops up on the map and he takes a moment to admire it, as he always does when he sees it, the silly photo he’d taken of her with her eyes crossed and her tongue out. It was a group evening at The Crown & Anchor after they’d all had a few drinks, bodies warm and laughter easy. It brings a smile to his face every time it comes up.
