Summary
It's a harsh winter in Kildare with more snow and ice that the town has seen in years. A single gunshot rings out in the frozen swamp breaking the ice both literally and metaphorically. It looks like another snowstorm is coming and it's too cold to face it alone. A near death situation brings a shattered Kiara Carrera into the care of Rafe Cameron. Broken into many pieces but to him she was worth putting back together again.

Pope Heyward decides to join the Marines and is unfortunately killed in a training accident. His family and friends are left to pick up the pieces especially Cleo Anderson. She is often seen by some Kildare residents as just an immigrant who has overstayed her welcome. Not wanting to be a burden to the Heywards anymore Cleo decides to establish herself and find her own place to live She feels lost and isolated since Pope's untimely death. Rafe Cameron is the one real estate agent willing to take on Cleo as a client and the one willing to move heaven and earth to heal her.

It’s the anniversary of Terrance’s death and Cleo soothes herself on the cool fall evening making a batch of her famous gumbo after the bait shop closes. It also happens to be the anniversary of Ward’s death much to Rafe’s dismay and he spends most of the day fishing in his favorite spot with Barry. The savory aroma of gumbo cooking leads Rafe to the bait shop and the Bahamian princess that is Cleo.

In the event of John B. and Sarah's untimely deaths their child needs to be raised. Having both faith in them and a bit of a sense of humor they name both Rafe and Kiara as the guardians. Kiara wants it to be a strictly co-parenting thing as she is now grieving three lost friends. Rafe is cool with that but knows damn well that there's something more to them much to his girlfriend Sofia's dismay. The Carreras think their daughter should be concerned with her own future and give up her guardianship to Rose and Ward Cameron.....which is exactly what they want.
