Ronan frowned. He didn’t like the self-derision in Adam’s voice.

Carmen stepped in front of Hennessy as if to block him from entering, but this version of Adam Parrish, insouciant and cruel, didn't seem inclined to move from the bohemian front porch. This was not the man she'd seen on Ronan's dreamt phone, reserved but in love; this was his face stretched across someone else. Across another thing. Something dark.

“Ronan?”
Metal clicked on metal with a deadly shnik, and Adam looked up. There was Ronan, just outside the sepia-toned kitchen Adam loved. Adam took his time lifting his helmet up, so happy to see him that he almost didn’t notice that Ronan was holding a gun.
“Jesus, Ronan, it’s me.” Ronan must have seen a stranger wandering around in a helmet and assumed the worst. That’s what Adam got for trying to be romantic. His voice was wry when he teased, “You know how to take a surprise well.” -

Adam felt sleep try to reach him again. This time its grasp was firmer, persuasive, a black canvas with a carousel of illogical images dancing in muted colors to stun him, until he felt them pick up the pace and swirl faster, and while he was following them, they spiraled into so many wheels. Wheels and wheels and wheels, rotating fast, unstoppable, the word “tamquam” burned on their rims, millions of them in all sizes and shapes and ages, and suddenly pulsating underneath them, the unbearable thought jolting him alert: We haven't even kissed yet.

Summary
Adam Parrish is not a ghost hunter, but thanks to one Richard Campbell Gansey III, he finds himself taking a weekend off in late June, not to catch up on sleep like he so desperately needs, but to spend it ghost hunting at a private boarding school in his shitty hometown that he had not managed to score enough scholarship money to attend.
Adam always finds himself wanting to please Gansey, even if it’s only so he can make out with Adam’s ex-girlfriend in the shadows of this ostensibly haunted old building.
Even if it means he has to spend the evening with Ronan Lynch.

Adam knew he had kind of a hard time indulging in things. He mostly found that this didn’t cause too many problems - refusing to go out to dinner or buy that new pair of shoes meant more money in his savings account, after all, and that was never a bad thing. It only became an issue when refusing to go out to dinner meant skipping dinner, and not buying that new pair of shoes meant wearing the ones with holes in them for another two months.
So he was trying to get better. He was trying to get better at wanting things. One of the things he was trying to get better at wanting was Ronan Lynch, because Ronan wanted him, as well, and that, for some reason, turned the want into a different, more pressing kind of hunger. Which was why he was driving to the Barns at just after midnight, coming off of a six hour shift, needing to get up for another one in five hours.
