Summary
It had been supposed to go down. That was the whole point — down, after, through the gap while there was still a gap. The way down had taken one look at where he wanted to be, made a decision he wasn't consulted on, and put him here instead. The wrong hell. A cold backward country a few centuries shy of the fork, with a demon problem, a body count, and the one man who might know how the doors worked sitting at the center of all of it like a spider — the lunatic who'd torn the sky open over the local town and let the dark pour through.
So: find the lunatic. Simple enough, except finding him meant falling in with a drunk who killed things for a living and a woman who threw fire, and the drunk had a third one stashed somewhere, pale and blond and allergic to conversation, who turned out to be the lunatic's son. Which was how a man ended up hunting the worst thing in the country shoulder to shoulder with its child and two people whose whole family trade was putting things like him in the ground.
He was sure it would be fine.

Summary
"Find a new name," his mother whispered as demons tore their world apart. "Hide what you are."
Lost between realms—too inhuman for mortals, marked for death by demons—he wanders a path not of his choosing. Each step takes him further from what he was born to be, into a performance of humanity so carefully crafted he sometimes forgets it's a lie.
He buries his father's sword beneath stolen clothes.
He silences the power that sings in his veins.
He speaks a name that isn't his until his true one feels like someone else's memory.
But in the shadowed midway of his divided soul, the path back to himself remains. And when his past returns wearing his own face, the careful distance between what he is and what he pretends to be begins to collapse.
Some legacies can't be outrun.

Summary
It was then that two portraits caught his eye. Surrounded by the cheery pictures that chronicled Hawke’s life, many taken in candid moments, the portraits could not have stuck out more. They were of two men, both dark-haired and eerily pale, but one had Hawke’s blue eyes and the other one had amber eyes.
“Brandon and Walter Hawke,” Nero said, more to himself.
“Who now,” said Dante.
“The twins,” Nero said, pointing to the two portraits. The men looked incredibly similar to each other: they had the same high cheekbones, the same hawk-like nose, even the same hairline, but one twin had his hair down past his shoulders and the other had hidden it under a top hat. If Nero had to guess, he’d say the portraits had been done around the 1800s, thereabouts, but hell if he could pin down the decade.
“What, twins owned this place?” Dante said.
Nero shook his head. “Not at the same time,” he said. “From what Hawke said, Brandon was the first. When he died, Walter inherited the place.” He looked around the corridor, sniffed, and said, “Guess he didn’t do much with it.”
