Summary
“Did’ja hear about the guy who had his leg bit clear off by a fish?” Daichi perked up at the stranger’s words and took a sip of his beer. A pair of men a little way down the bar were talking loudly, their accents thick.
“By a fish?” The other questioned, sounding as though he was juggling marbles in his throat. “Ain't no fish big nough’ to bite a man’s leg off,” he jabbed.
The first man sneered and smacked the bottom of his glass atop the second man’s head in retaliation. “Is too! One of them fish the cap’n was looking for.”
Daichi subconsciously leaned closer to the pair. This topic had been trending recently. The travelers would often speak about some kind of fish that could tear a man limb from limb.
Daichi had heard a couple of names for these fish before: mermaids, nereids, even sirens. Supposedly, they were lethal creatures that lured men to their deaths with a melodic tune. The fish would edge them closer and closer to the water before dragging them to the depths and freeing their lungs of air. For whatever reason, the local buccaneers liked to call them fish, as an insult of some kind. Daichi didn’t quite understand, of course, but then again, no “landlubber” did.
