    Zuko is a dragon, but does not know until the shocking agony of the Agni Kai forces him to change, sending him fleeing from his old life as the Fire Nation prince. Alone, severely injured, and unable to change back, he collapses on the property of a certain established Earth Kingdom family.

    And, well, there's simply nothing better than having a dragon around as a seeing eye animal to convince your parents you're safe enough to get into all sorts of mischief.

    (AKA, Zuko is a dragon and is inducted into the Beifong family as a seeing eye animal but is mostly just Toph's friend. And the Avatar happens.)

    “—I hurt you,” Susie finished. She chewed on the concept, the edges of her voice frantic, her throat thick. “Because you deserved it.”

    “Yes.” Kris pressed her hands against their chest. They smiled in a way that failed to be reassuring. Each desperate breath shuddering through their lungs confirmed everything Susie didn't want to know. “S’fine. It’s okay.”

    Kris burned like a charred pan straight out of the oven, or an oil fire stoked by liquor. Susie reeled away. “You—you were trying to set me up,” Susie accused, trying to edge words around the chasm opening in her gut. “You were trying to get me to hit you.”

    Kris wants Susie to hurt them. They need her to hurt them. Susie isn't as on board with the idea as they are.
