In the centre of the village was a large stand, small enough that people could see everything atop it. Screwed to the wooden stand was an old pillory, splintered and covered in rusty metal, and Jaskier took a good guess that that was where he was going to spend the next two weeks.

About twenty feet away, Geralt stops short, caught by the reflection of soft, ethereal firelight upon his bard’s face. There are words that dance among the fireflies, caught in the light breeze.
Have you ever wanted something, so badly you cannot breathe?
Have you ever loved someone, madly?
The words are so soft, so full of love they seem fit to burst outward in a flurry of sparks that will reach upwards to the heavens; hanging amongst the brilliant stars like wishes.

Geralt didn’t care to eavesdrop, really, even less than he wanted to hear another bawdy ballad. It was better to keep his eyes on his ale, stay out of trouble, and wait for Jaskier to be finished.
“So how much longer do you think he’ll live?” asked the baron, drumming his fingers on the table. “Such clever songs. I hope we’ll hear another few years’ worth before he goes.”Geralt immediately stilled, the performance fading into the background.

In which Geralt learns that traveling bards are one of the most dangerous professions for very good reason. He overhears some nobles betting on how long his bard would survive on the path, and Jaskier’s odds apparently aren’t good.
Geralt will be damned before that happens.
