“If you don’t want me talkin’ ‘bout him like- Y’know, I’d understand, he was yours, at the end.”
“... I miss him,” Charles echoes John’s earlier statement and John nods roughly, “Burying him… It was odd, I felt relieved. He was suffering, and then he wasn’t.”
John raises his brows then huffs weakly and shakes his head in disbelief.
“Only you, Charles,” John mutters, “Could be so fuckin’ selfless.”
“I’m not-”
“I wasn’t relieved, I was miserable, I wanted the world to end,” John rubs at his eyes again, “Felt like it had. He told me to go be ‘a man’... I know what he meant, and I knew I’d never live up to it.”

“It was a nice wedding,” Charles says.
The little bird sitting on the top of Arthur’s grave tilts its head and peers at him, then flutters off in a burst of chirps. Charles draws in a lungful of smoke, holds it there for a long moment until it burns, and exhales. He sets the unfinished half of the cigarette at the base of the cross, the smoke spiralling skywards like a prayer, and runs a thumb over the fading knife cuts in the wood.

Summary
A late night hunt goes awry when Arthur and Charles are chased across the tracks cutting through the border of the Heartlands and Lemoyne, when a ghostly train barrels right into, or rather, through them. Somehow, they find themselves separated and ten years in the past.
Arthur finds himself looking after a teenage Charles, who's more of an angry, scrawny kitten than the calm, skillful hunter he knows so well.
On the other end, Charles comes face to face with a young Arthur who is smug, cocky, and a flirt.
